Cosmetic Laser Surgery:
Laser is an exciting advancement that offers numerous advantages in treatment of multiple skin conditions. The laser is utilized for the eradication of:
Skin Cancer:
High selectivity and efficiency make laser therapy the treatment of choice for certain cancers, in certain areas of the body. There is minimal discomfort to the patient and no need for sutures.
Benign Growths:
During a lifetime, many different growths can appear on a person's skin. They are not normally cancerous. As a matter of fact, the very large majority of such conditions are benign and include moles, papillomas-hyperplasias, etc. Because of tenderness, size, location in friction areas, unsightliness, or suspicious appearance or behavior, these growths can safely be removed by laser, after specific diagnosis. Actinic keratosis, or "sun-damage spots", are pre-cancerous - which means they must be removed, in order to avoid development into cancer, at a later time.
Old Age Spots:
The most common age spots are seborrheic keratoses and cherry angiomas. Both of these conditions respond spectacularly to laser therapy.
Seborrheic keratoses often first appear on the trunk and limbs. They are large, rough spots, which later go on to develop a darker appearance. They do not disappear spontaneously.
Cherry angiomas, or senile angiomas, are small red raised bumps, which can be found anywhere on the skin. They may appear as early as the third decade.
Broken Blood Vessels:
Broken blood vessels (enlarged blood vessels) or telangiectasias, are very common. They show up as fine red, or bluish spots or lines on the face, neck, upper chest, arms, hands and legs. Some people have them so extensively, it makes their nose and cheeks appear bright red or purplish red. This causes them to be erroneously thought of as heavy drinkers. Laser treatment can provide dramatic relief to this problem. Laser is simple, swift and painless. Depending on the extent of involvement broken bloodvessels can be removed with the laser, in one or more treatments. This is not considered a cosmetic procedure.
Warts:
Laser treatment has proven extremely efficient in the removal of these difficult conditions.
Tattoos:
Unwanted tattoos, both decorative and accidental (including powder burns) can be removed using the laser. The removal is complete, and can often be accomplished in one treatment. The social as well as economic impact, which tattoo removal may have, on the quality of a person's life, makes this an important use of the laser. Removal of tattoos, considered to be in bad taste, is an important part of the rehabilitation of some individuals.
Birthmarks:
A birthmark may be due to abnormal accumulations of pigment cells. This is called Congenital Nevocytic Nevus. Or it may be due to an abnormal accumulation of blood vessels, and is then called Hemangioma. Hemangiomas appear at birth or shortly thereafter. They may be red, blue or purplish, raised or flat.
The Port-wine stain birthmark is a hemangioma, which persists into adult life. It is most commonly seen on the back and neck, but also occurs on the trunk, arms and legs. These birthmarks are usually large and unsightly. They may have a profound emotional effect on the adult or child. In the adult the birthmark frequently becomes bumpy and thickened, and may bleed. Before laser treatment, this condition usually was left untreated. Over the years, various methods were tried to remove the port-wine stain. All attempts resulted in little or no success. X-ray treatments, plastic surgery (skin grafts), tattooing and freezing with liquid nitrogen or dry ice, have all been tried and given up due to poor results. Most patients were then advised to use cover-up makeup, and given hope that effective treatment would be available in the future. For most of these people, that time had arrived with the laser. The process is effective, bloodless, painless, and does not require a hospital stay. Walk-in - Walk-out!!!
Recurrent Herpes Simplex:
In the genital area, some studies suggest that laser treatment to the area can prevent recurrences.
Liver Spots:
Lentigines or liver spots can usually be found on the face and hands. They are very common and easily eliminated.

Keloids:
Keloids are large overgrown scars that occur at old surgery sites, acne cysts, ear piercing and even from normal skin. These can be treated with a great deal of success by the laser.

Frequently Asked Questions and Answers:
What is a laser and what does it do?
A laser is a device which generates an intense beam of light. This light beam is man-made and highly focused. This highly precise tissue-vaporizing tool makes contact with the skin. The skin absorbs the light and releases energy heat. The heat coagulates the substances in and underneath the skin. The light beam emanates from a slender tube and is directed at the lesion, or mark on your skin, that you wish to have removed. The length of exposure and the power are adjusted to the size and depth of the lesion.
Is the laser treatment safe?
Since the laser gives off non-ionizing radiation light rather than x-rays, it cannot cause cancer or genetic changes. The laser beam is very precise and penetrates the skin to only 1mm. The main precaution in the room is the use of eyeglasses (or goggles) to protect the eyes from the intense light.
Will I feel discomfort?
Rather than to cause you any discomfort, Dr. Barsky prefers to use light local anesthesia (this will not prevent you from driving auto home after treatment.)
Where is the treatment given?
The treatment is given in our certified outpatient suite.
Visit the Patient's Guides to Wrinkles, Collagen and Stretch Marks to find out how lasers can also be used to smooth out the aging process, erase pregnancy's effect on the skin and revive the proteins that make-up our skin.
