Laser Eyelids:
How does the laser work?
The laser is an invisible, intense beam of light that can be focused to a pinpoint and used instead of a scalpel. Because the laser seals blood vessels as it cuts, bleeding is almost nonexistent. In those few cases where serious complications have occurred following the older non-laser type of eyelid surgery, the complications have been related to bleeding. Bleeding is also the cause of bruising and swelling, which is practically eliminated with the use of the laser. Thus, we believe the laser procedure is not only safer, but also, since less bruising and swelling occurs, allows for a faster return to normal activities.
Is the procedure done in the Hospital?
No. Your laser surgery will be performed right here in our fully equipped, office-based surgical suite. Following surgery you can go home or to a hotel, to recover in comfort. We will ask you to return for a follow - up visit three days later.
How long does the procedure take?
The actual laser procedure takes only 20 minutes per eye (one-third less time than the older method requires). However, we will ask you to spend about half a day in our outpatient facility, usually a morning. This is so you will fully recover from your light sedation before returning to your home or hotel.
When can I return to work and social activities?
Since the laser method causes minimal swelling or bruising, as compared to the non-laser methods, most of our patients can return to normal activities after a weekend. You may also apply eye make-up after this time.
What about stitches or scarring?
Sutures are not used when the laser method is performed on the lower eyelids, which also means faster healing. Sutures are always undetectable, and for the lower lids, there is no visible scarring. On upper eyelids you may see a thin, light colored scar, which is concealed in the lid crease. This scar may be visible for several weeks or months, but only when the eyes are closed and the lids are stretched. Under normal conditions, the scars are not visible.
Will it hurt?
No. Laser procedures are remarkably pain free. To help you relax, however, the procedure is performed under light sedation and a local anesthetic.
How much does it cost?
Although fees vary depending on each individual case, typically our fee ranges from $3,000 to $5,000. We will discuss the costs for your particular procedure during our initial consultation.
Why laser eyelid surgery?
Many patients who want to have excess skin and bags removed from around the eyes are choosing laser eyelid surgery over the older surgery method. The reason: Lasers offer patients many advantages, including less bruising and less swelling than the older method. As a result, faster recovery and fewer complications. The final cosmetic results are spectacular!
